050808-71 Summer Fruit Research - I was interested to review this week, yet more interesting data coming out of that nutritional hotbed of research, Dundee Ninewells Hospital. Ever trying to break the assumption that medicine and nutrition are different fields and never the twain shall meet and following on from the invaluable ground breaking research undertaken at Nine Wells by Dr. Margaret Ritchie. Research undertaken via Prof. Annie Andersons team suggests that its not only fresh, local and organic that determines what food is best for our health but that choosing the right varietals of fruit or vegetables could be pivotal in determining its phytonutrient content and whence the health outcomes of eating it , in us the public. For example if your looking for the healthiest raspberries to consume — the Scottish grown Glen Ample variety tops the charts for many of the pivotal anti-oxidants from anthocyanin and cyanidins to vitamin C and quercitin and also achieve top scores for total phenolic anti-oxidant content. If your looking for ellagic acid though — Spanish varieties of raspberries are your best bet. And with strawberries — if its anthocyanins you’re looking for, you can't go far wrong with Chandler variety. The study also highlights the value of lesser known and used berry types in this country, such as crowberry, whortleberry, rowan and sea buckthorn. Details of the research provided on a CD Rom from the Berry Scotland Project also show that the freezing does nothing to alter the anti-oxidant value of many a berry and cherry, apart from its vitamin C content (although studies indicate that vitamin C content is not altered by freezing in strawberries) unless you consume the frozen products a year or so on. However jam making proves to have a more deleterious effect — reducing by 1/5th flavanol content of strawberries and rapberries for example and with 6 months storage by a further 50%. Juicing came out very badly with losses in anti-oxidant content being substantial — 54%-85%, depending on the anti-oxidant measured. - Source: Centre for Public Health and Nutrition Research- Department of Medicine, Ninewells Hospital, Dundee.
050727-70 Decison made on 12th July Re: EUSD - European Court of Justice ruled in favour of implementing the EU Food Supplements Directive. Although UK supp. industry has had derogation granted by the FSA for 100 Xtra nutrients not currently on the EU Positives List e.g. Boron, esterified Vit C. In short many nutrients and suppliements stand still to be available whilst safety documents are presented for an additional 500 of them, until 2010 (end 2009). FSA Dossier Info. The only worrying thing is that enzymes, not currently covered incl. plant enzymes like bromelain are being murmered about- legislation wise so wonder what will happen next with this category! - Source: Source: Patrick Holford; Biocare; Health Plus; Solgar; Foresight; Health Food Business News (Target Publ. 050727-69 DICLOFENAC - Gives White Backed Vultures Terminal case of Gout?: - White Backed Vultures appear to be experiencing the most rapid extinction ever (beating the dodo even!). The birds perform a strong carrion collection role in Asia, by eating up human (Zorastrian religion) and animal corpses. Their impending extinction appears to be due to administration of dicolfenac by vets and farmers to cows and waterbuffalo (for mastitis/ limb damage). Extensive post mortem studies on the dead vultures revealed huge accumulation of uric acid crystals around kidneys and other vital organs. As a side order the demise of the birds is leading to huge increase in various contagious diseas states: rabies-bubonic plague; typhus and Parsis have had to introduce Solar cremation - counter to their Zorastrian beliefs to dispose of their dead. The nutrition message for gout is: Eat Cherries (English currently in season), espec. if you've been on the diclofenec! 1/2 lb (or 30-40) per day cherries reported to reduce uric acid levels; lots of water; celery seed (neutralises uric acid in the tissues - Australia trials); nettle leaf tea (reduce acidity in the body); reduce alcohol, which increases production of uric acid; avoid high purine content foods: shellfish; herring; sardine; mackerel; poultry; red meat + game; yeast; legumes; spinach. - Source: Saturday Telegraph reporting RSPB International Research- Team lead by Dr. Debbie Pain- no pun intended! Ornithol. Soc. Pakistan and Perigrine foundation - USA - Dr. Lindsay Oaks- Washington State Univ.
